Psychotherapy and Your Insurance: What Every Ontario Resident Needs to Know

Insurance and psychotherapy blog

Hey Ontario! So, you’ve been thinking about starting psychotherapy, and that’s awesome. Taking care of your mental health is a huge step, and you should be proud of yourself. But, I know what you’re probably wondering – “Is this going to cost me an arm and a leg?”

Good news! Psychotherapy might already be covered by your insurance (or your partner’s or your parents’ if you are under their plan). Whether it’s through your work benefits or your personal extended health plan, there’s a chance you could get some (or even all) of your therapy costs reimbursed.

But how do you figure that out? Don’t worry, I’ve got your back.

1. Dig Out Your Insurance Documents

First things first, channel your inner Sherlock Holmes and dig out your insurance policy documents. I know, it’s not exactly a beach read, but trust me, it’s worth it. Look for sections about “mental health benefits,” “paramedical services,” or “psychotherapy”, specifically, whether it covers Registered Psychotherapists (RPs) or Registered Social Workers (RSWs). If you find those magic words, bingo! You’re likely covered.

If your eyes are glazing over, don’t panic. Most policies have a summary page that breaks down the key points. Or, you can usually find an online version of your plan that’s easier to navigate.

2. Call Your Insurance Provider

Okay, maybe you found the info in your policy, or maybe it’s still a mystery. Either way, your next step is to call your insurance provider. Yep, it’s time to chat with a real human. They can give you the definitive answer on whether or not psychotherapy is covered and which type of service provider.

Don’t be shy about asking questions! Here are a few key ones to get you started:

  • Is psychotherapy covered under my plan?
  • Are Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Social Workers covered?
  • Are there any limitations on the number of sessions or a yearly cap?
  • What percentage of the cost is covered?

Write down all the details so you have them handy when you’re ready to book an appointment.

3. Check With Your Employer

If your insurance is through your work, your HR department or benefits coordinator can be a great resource. They can help you understand your coverage and point you in the right direction.

Which insurance companies in Ontario usually cover psychotherapy?

While the specific coverage details vary depending on the individual plan, here are some insurance companies in Ontario that are known to commonly offer coverage for psychotherapy:

  • Canada Life
  • Sun Life
  • Manulife
  • Green Shield Canada
  • Blue Cross

This is not an exhaustive list, and many other insurance providers may also offer coverage for psychotherapy. It’s important to confirm the details of your specific plan by checking your policy documents or contacting your insurance provider directly.

They can provide you with accurate information about which mental health practitioners are covered (e.g., psychotherapists, social workers), the number of sessions allowed, and any limitations or requirements for reimbursement.

You've Got This!

Figuring out insurance coverage can feel overwhelming, but don’t let it discourage you from getting the help you need. Take it one step at a time, ask lots of questions, and don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself.

You’re not alone in this. There are tons of resources available to help you navigate the system and find the support you deserve. At Open Door Therapist, our experienced team of Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Social Workers are ready to help you with any questions you may have.
